Aeolian Islands

Why by boat

The Aeolians are seven islands, each with its own character: glamorous Panarea, Salina green with vineyards, Lipari the largest, Vulcano with its sulphurous waters, Stromboli with its ever-active volcano. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

The best way to see them is by boat: distances are short, the most beautiful coves can only be reached from the sea, and in the evening you can stay at anchor off a different island.

Departures are from Milazzo, Portorosa or directly from the islands, depending on the boat. To reach Sicily there are Catania and Palermo airports, with a transfer or helicopter to embarkation.

The itinerary

Four stops not to miss

A sample route: we build it around your days, the weather and what you want to experience.

  1. 01

    Panarea

The most glamorous island: Cala Junco between the cliffs, the islets of Lisca Bianca and Basiluzzo, and evenings ashore among the white houses.

  2. 02

    Lipari and Vulcano

The pale beaches below the old pumice quarries on Lipari, the sea stacks and the warm, sulphurous waters of Vulcano.

  3. 03

    Salina

Malvasia vineyards on the slopes, Malfa and the bay of Pollara, where the cliff drops straight into the sea.

  4. 04

    Stromboli

The Sciara del Fuoco seen from the boat at sunset, with Strombolicchio just a few minutes away.

The moment

Evening off the Sciara del Fuoco, when Stromboli lights up over the sea.

When to go

The season

The best season runs from June to September. June and September are quieter, with warm water; in August the islands are at their liveliest, and moorings should be booked early.

Frequently asked questions

Before you set off

Where do we depart from?

From Milazzo, Portorosa or Lipari, depending on the boat. In the proposal we tell you the port of embarkation and how to get there from Catania or Palermo.

Can you see Stromboli’s activity from the sea?

Yes, off the Sciara del Fuoco, especially at sunset and in the evening. The volcano’s activity changes from day to day and the captain follows the authorities’ guidance.

How many days do I need?

In three to five days you can see Panarea, Lipari, Vulcano and Salina. With a week you can also reach Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi at a relaxed pace.

Can we sleep on board?

Yes, on boats with cabins and on catamarans. Tell us in the form how many nights and how many guests.

Can we add a chef on board?

Yes: Aeolian cuisine with the catch of the day, Salina capers and Malvasia, served at anchor.
