APA in a yacht charter: what it is and how it works

Charter quotes often show the abbreviation APA: Advance Provisioning Allowance. It is an advance paid together with the balance to cover the expenses of the week.

What it covers

  • Fuel for the yacht and the tender.
  • Port fees, moorings and buoys.
  • Provisions: food and drinks.
  • Other expenses requested by the guests.

How much you pay

Usually 25–30% of the charter rate. On a yacht at €20,000 per week, the APA is therefore about €5,000–6,000.

Who manages it

The captain uses the APA for provisioning and refuelling and keeps every receipt. You can ask for the updated balance at any time.

At the end of the week

The captain presents the accounts with all the expenses. Any amount left over is returned; if the APA is not enough, the difference is topped up.

When there is none

On day trips and some yachts fuel is already included in the rate, as on the MIMAY schooner. Every card in our fleet shows what is included.
