The Saronic Gulf is the home sea of the Athenians: islands close together, elegant harbours and calm water even when the meltemi blows in the Cyclades. Departures are from Alimos Marina, forty minutes from the airport.
The islands
- Aegina: the Temple of Aphaia, pistachios and the bays of the west coast.
- Poros: the narrow channel facing the Peloponnese and the clock tower.
- Hydra: no cars, only donkeys and boats, with stone captains’ houses.
- Spetses: neoclassical villas, pine woods and evenings in the old harbour.
Why it is the safest choice
In July and August the meltemi can make crossings in the Cyclades demanding. The Saronic Gulf is sheltered: for first-timers, or families with children, it is the calmest destination in Greece.
